I have a tmobile account and my phone locked up my brother gave me an att phone that had been disconnected?

with the att phone being disconnected will I have trouble getting the subsidy unlock code he used the att phone as a prepaid after itwas disconnected i know it was on the same network and i want to unlock it for tmobile. I just didnt know if I'd still be able to get the code
