Safety question for boaters and swimmers?

I Have a Type I life vest to Wear While Sailing and Swimming. I Always Get Harped On For Not Wearing The Crotch Strap, Find It Unnecessary As The Jacket Fits Me Pretty Well. Do I Have An Argument?
