How do I find a topic for a research paper for a Theories of Writing cl?

First off, an ytical paper is supposed to yze and define a subject. For instance, for creative writing you would state what goes into and what can be found in creative writing. Like what steps are taken, what elements of writing are used, etc. If you are doing composition I would suggest that you look into how to organize a paper to create an emotional attachment, logical attachment, or ethical attachment.
