Would it be so bad if I contacted this guy I dated again?

I ended things twice w/him, with the last time being about three weeks ago. I was the one who made up with him the first time. The reason I ended things the first time was because we're just friends w/benefits & he was really insistent on calling me his friend when his friend who I met asked us how long we'd been going out. This guy I was dating was obviously ashamed of me and/or our friends w/benefits situation. This last time I ended things via text saying I was tired of us being friends w/benefits. He just texted back saying, "Oh, okay, I understand." I haven't heard from him since. I really miss our fun and the , but we first and foremost had a friendship, believe it or not. It wasn't just . We did things together. Would it be so bad if I just texted him saying hi? Thanks.
